2019 was extremely fast for me. Like seriously, this fall semester felt like a month! I’ve been on the go-go-go and didn’t have a lot of time to sit down and check out all the great music that came out this year. I was also unable to go to many concerts this year as well because of, well, “becoming an adult”. Last spring semester, I decided to work on partnerships with music festivals for KURE to participate with press. Never in my life would I think this station would become so successful from two festivals. In addition to these amazing weekends, here are a few of my top concerts of 2019 (in no particular order):
Let me start by saying that 2019 was more or less dominated again by Hip Hop tracks. Songs like “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “bad guy” by Billie Eilish commanded every second of airtime on the radio. That’s not to say there are a few diamonds in the rough and hopefully you’ll find a few below to enjoy.
LA has some big names when it comes to the music industry, but it’s amazing to see LA-based artists with new and upcoming music. Electric Guest’s latest album, “KIN”, is genuinely one of my favorites this school year. If you’re looking for a great indie pop vibe with lo-fi tracks, this is definitely the album for you!
This past week, I was able to sit down with Nate Carabaugh (known as XIX) to talk about the local rap and hip hop scene in Iowa. Although they’re a rare breed around these parts, XIX discusses his upbringings as a musician with plans for future projects. His newest EP, “Hello :)”, can be found on Spotify and Apple Music right now, and you should definitely check it out!
This past Sunday, I was lucky enough to catch the one and only Jade Bird at Wooly’s in Des Moines with some of our other KURE members. Our first time seeing her live was this past summer at Hinterland in St.Charles, IA. Since then, KURE has been blown away with her projects, including her newest self-titled album. This past weekend’s performance was no disappointment.
