General Collection
Album Title Artist |
Description |
Sunset Tree Mountain Goats |
Latest from the great John Darnielle continues in the vain of the other Beggars releases. Less Lo-Fi, John Vanderslice on the boards, with more orchestration. The solid songwriting cements this as one of his more brilliant releases. Pla
y 3, 2, 1, 5, 11 if you like Mr. Vanderslice, Woodie Guthrie, or Nick Drake. |
The Vulture Jet By Day |
Jet by Day comes barreling out of Athens, Georgia with Aggressive (dare I say emoish) Indie Rock with a
slight southern sludge influence. These guys had one of the last records released on the late/great Kindercore record Label. Great stuff if you like Paper Lions, Desperacidos, The Sheila Divine or Superchunk. I recommend the even tracks starting with 2, 3, and 6. |
Martha Wainright Martha Wainright |
I won't go into the whole family History, needless to say Mom & Dad and Brother all have made names for themselves. Folk/Country influenced rock/pop, Marta demonstrates her vocal intensity and range. Excellent debut full length for f
ans of Cat Power, Neko Case, PJ Harvey etc. Play 1, 7, 10 or 3.
|
Prom Amy Ray |
Slightly more rockin' than most indigo girls albums. Amy Ray does some social and self reflection on her second solo record. Among the people backing her up are Donna Dresch (riot grrls represent!) and members of nineteen-fortyfive (who
happen to be on Amy's label Daemon Records). If you like Billy Bragg, REM, Ani Difranco or The Butchies give this a try. Play 2, 6 or 10. |
In the Heart of Mankind Deadman |
Southwestern Gothic root rock with fragile and smokey ethereal vocals . Fans of Giant Sand/Howe Gelb, Varnaline, or American Music Club should try this one. Start with 3 or 1, 5 has a Bob Dylan feel to it. |
Police, Police Everything, now! |
Muncie, Indiana? Who would think there were any bands in Muncie? Country-punk-rock-pop eclectic band with catchy songs for you to enjoy. Xylophones rock! If you play The Unicorns, Olympic Hopefuls or The Flaming Lips gove 3, 5, or 4 a t
ry. |
Headphones Headphones |
Members of Pedro The Lion's all-synth side project. If Postal Service is just too care free for you then maybe this is on your list. Play 3, 6 or 9. |
Oscillations from the Anti-Sun Stereolab |
Singles and Rarities spanning 15 years of the great Stereolab. You don't know who Stereolab is? Get Out of my studio! Play your favorites or try 4, 6, 14, 1... This should be an incredible boxset!
|
Cat Spectacular! Bearsuit |
Spontaneous but Natural sounding Twee-rock who delve into electro-disco, shoegaze, riot-grrl and more. So if you like Architecture in Helsinki, E6 bands, or Happy Happy Birthday to Me records this is all you. Go with 2, 6, 7, 3 or 10
|
In a Cave French Toast |
Borderline synthpop Indie Rock to Candance too. Sounds like Q and Not U with a drum machine, Radiohead on 4. Try 1, 5, 4 or 3 is a cool instrumental. |
Chateauvallon Chevreuil |
Drum and Guitar two piece trying their best to avoid association to Hella or Lightning Bolt. This is more of an energetic math rock thing. Recorded by the great Steve Albini. RIYL: Don Caballero, Rodan... Play 9, 6, 2, 3 |
Things in Night Strange |
Jagged Guitars, droning keyboards, and crazy production make for a great headphone trip. Equal parts Modest Mouse and Spiritualized. Play 3, 2, 4 or 9. |
Pretty in Black Ravonettes |
Neal wanted to not like this album, but instead he finds it easy to call it a "Solid Album." Filled with Bells, Whistles, Awesome Covers and Guest Appearances. Dark 50's emulation while maintaining its freshness dating. If you like Phil
Spektor, Early Elvis, White Stripes etc. then give this a spin. Neal says 3, 6, 5, 12, 4 and more are good. |
No Apologies Eyeliners |
Melodic pop-punk with female vocals. Rockin' yet feel good music for fans of Save Ferris, Rancid, The Distillers etc. Ask Servo about them! Play 2, 6, 1, 5. |
Pretendo Pretendo |
Members of Enon, Skeleton Key, Creedle and Morricone Youth make up Pretendo. However this still ends up being middle of the road Indie Rock with a slight bit of an edge. Try if you like Superchunk, Mission to Burma, Camper Van Beethoven
. Play 3, 6, 3, 8. |
Brilliante Records Label Sampler Various |
Lots of Upbeat Midwestern Indie Rock bands on this Chicago labels sampler including Venue (15) Clyde Federal (1) Decibully (7) The M's (12) and more. |
Matter + Form VNV Nation |
VNV Nation have been around for some time, this album takes a synthy 80s dance sound with a darker gothic side. RIYL: The Faint, The Knife... Try 2, 3, 11, or 5. |
