General Collection
Album Title Artist |
Description |
The Guero Beck |
Full length from Beck. Like a more electronic reworking of Mellow Gold. Not too funky, not too depressing, just quirky old Beck. Play 3, 10, 7 or 1 (if you must) |
The Bravery The Bravery |
A new Indie Hype band that isn't as disappointing as you might have expected. Dancey and Dark 80's PostPunk emulators from New York City. Fans of The Faint, Joy Division & The Cure or Bloc Party take note. Play 2, 5, 4, 6 |
Silent Alarm Bloc Party |
Speaking of Bloc Party....This record supposedly plays itself (now that is a hell of a promotional gimmick!) Dance Punk done right. Catchy and emotionally driven, Bloc Party is marking their spot in an overcrowded genre. RIYL: Gang of Four, Joy Division, The Notwist. Play 2, 4, 9, 12 or the whole thing. |
Lost and Safe The Books |
Cut and Paste arrangements of found sound audio samples among string and drum instrumentations. More song based than some previous Books albums. Play 6, 3 or 2 if you like Boards of Canada, Cassette Boy, Dosh. |
Doing the Distance Snowglobe |
Good Psychadelic Orchestral Pop from Memphis. The songs blend into each other. If you like Neutral Milk Hotel, Beulah or Olivia Tremor Control this is for you. Tracks 12, 4, and 9 are highly recommended. |
What Comes After the Blues Magnolia Electric Co. |
Jason Molina takes a new band name but continues the working class folk-rock he mastered as Songsohia. Every song is deeply personal and intimate like a next generation Bruce Springsteen or Neil Young. Try 2, 7 or 8 to start. |
No Wow The Kills |
White Stripes without the blues or bridges. I think that sums it up really. Overdriven guitar and drum machine two piece that doesn't break too much ground. Play 1, 5, 2 or 7 |
Golden Ocean 50 Foot Wave |
Kristin Hersh and Throwing Muses bassist Bernard Georges continue to explore their angry, illtempered IndieRAWK side. This full length major label album includes a few tracks from the 2003 EP on 4AD. If you like Pixies, l7, Sugar or Nirvana this might be for you. Try 4, 2, 7 or 1. |
Alone, Not Alone Montag |
Mellow electropop from Montreal features a number of guests like James Cargill (broadcast) Amy Millan (Stars) and Montreal hiphopper Sixtoo. For fans of m83, Broken Social Scene etc. Play 9, 10, 2... |
Blackhole Love Tractor |
Forefathers of the Athens, GA indierock scene. Fresh while staying true to their past, check out 3, 5, 1. RIYL: REM, Camper Van Beethoven, Pylon. |
Hold a Match for a Gasoline World Luke Temple |
Dreamy Folk-Pop. A soundtrack for a float down a river. Fans of Paul Simon, Mirah or Devandra Banhart should try 1, 7, 3 or 6. |
Raised by Wolves Fitzgerald |
Take Mates of State's quirky vocals and play it over some Ida and you might get Fitzgerald. Folky/poppy indie….play 1, 3, 2
|
A Tribute to Tigers By the End of Tonight |
Approaching Match Rock, but pulling out at the last moment and spewing a more aggressive product all over your face. (I think that review is a sexual reference.) Those who like bands like Don Caballero, the Fucking Champs or Maserati should play 1, 2 or 3. |
Twenty Paces DareDiablo |
Apparently Cheezy Classic Rock/metal instrumentals. The reviewers compares to Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly. You make your own call if it strikes you to play 11, 2, 4.
|
The World's Best Ex-Boyfriend Ad Frank and the Fast Easy Women |
Bitter singersongwriter tells you about his crappy lovelife. Compare to Babe the Blue Ox, Vanity Set, Pulp or Bowie in need of Sudafed. Recommended tracks include 2, 1, 4 and 7. |
Nothing is Cohesive Transcendence |
90's Guitar pop/rock with some synths and such. Loads of fun for fans of Spacehog, or the Flaming Lips. Play 4, 7 or 3. |
Welcome to Ignore Us The Holy Ghost |
If Q and not U were more radio friendly you would have this catchy record. Fans of White Stripes or Franz Ferdinand check out 2, 1 or 4
|
Family Tree Bellafea |
Two Piece from North Carolina, simple electric guitar and drums set up. Like Fioana Apple meets White Stripes. Play 1,2 or 3. |
We Don't Care About Your Good Times Turpentine Brothers |
Gritty Garage Rock from Boston. If The Animals were always wigged out on uppers this might be it. Sounds like Black Keys, Two Gallants, The Animals...Play 3, 7, 4 |
Get Along Like a House on Fire Tiger Mountain |
New York Rock Quintet with a 70’s Brit-Pop sound that is upbeat and relatively catchy. If you like MC5, Television or Blur then give this a try. Start with 1, 8, 11 or 2. |
Burn it to the Ground Lume |
Sappy, Catchy, energy drive alt-rock. RIYL: Doves, Muse, Kent, Travis. Play 7, 3, 5 or 4. |
The Lost Riots Hope of the States |
Moody, Atmospheric Brit-Rock with a strong instrumentation and refelective, downbeat lyrical musings. Fans of The Doves, Starsailor, The Verve or older Radiohead might enjoy. |
Pink Razors Chixdiggit |
Ramones style Punk with a guitar solo here or there. And in their live show they dedicate lots of songs to their moms, because they think it is funny. Fans of Groovie Ghoulis or The Queers play 1, 6, 2 or 5. |
The High Speed Scene The High Speed Scene |
Alternative hard rock/punk. Be careful, it’s catchy! FFO: Lit, Weezer. Play 3, 6 or 8. |
Molotov Cocktail Party Liquid Image |
Personal lyrics put to punk rock. Try 2, 4, or the "killer cover" at 6 if you like Good Riddance or Pennywise. |
Howdy Danny Allen |
Eclectic strangeness and rock. A little bit Pixies, a little bit P.U.S.A. and a little bit Pavement. Play 2, 5, 1 or 7. |
Masters of War Bob Weir and Ratdog |
Have you ever wanted to hear Grateful Dead alum Bob Weir and his band Ratdog cover Bob Dylan's "Masters of War"? Well here you go. |
The Past Recedes John Frusciante |
Single with acoustic guitar and John’s voice. He's a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and has an ambitious plan to put out like 6 albums in a year or some such. |
Feel Good Inc. Gorillaz |
Damon Albarn kicked Dan the Automator to the curb as Producer and brought in Danger Mouse, so I guess I can't complain much as I like both guys. This is the first single from the forthcoming album "Demon Days" and is the usual Rock meets Hip Hop strangeness of The Gorillaz. . Kid Koala is still manning the turntables, Damon singinhg and De La Soul provides some rhymes on this track. Neal was disappointed, I kinda dig it so make your own call. Play 1 duh. |
Loud Rock
13 Six Feet Under |
Chris Barnes and company explore the depths of social issues and ponder death. Honestly, this could be the worst band you have ever heard in your life. But somehow they surpass bad and jump over to good. Funny Bad, leaves me in stiches I tell you. Do not try to listen to a full album in one sitting. Sludgey Death Metal for fans of Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Celtic Frost, Immolation etc. I say try 6, 10 or 8...if you dare.
|
The Oncoming Storm Re-release Sampler Unearth |
MTV2 Metalcore with lots of Melody and formulaic Breakdowns. If you like Killswitch Engage or Hatebreed give 1 or 2 a spin. |
Alien(radio edits) Strapping Young Lad |
The Noise inside Devon Townsend's head is once again committed to disc. Are all Canadian metal bands this looney? Start a riot while listening to 4, 7, 10 or 2. RIYL: Meshuggah, Nile, Dillenger Escape Plan, or Dream Theater (but only on track 8) |
Sampler Bloodsimple |
Ex-Vision of Disorder members Tim Williams (vox) and Mike Kennedy (guitars) new band. Alt-Metal/Hardcore full of angry screams and melodic breaks. Try 4 or 5 if you like VOD, Disturbed or their label heads Mudvayne. |
We Sweat Blood Danko Jones |
Euro-Heavy Metal. Fu Manchu meets Jet? NME likes them. Try 3, 12, or 2 |
Backyard Babies Tinnitus |
Punk Arena Rock? Borderline Stoner Metal. Like Rancid meets Ugly Kid Joe, Fu Manchu, or Zeke (well, that's too bad) Go with 12, 3 or 4 if that intrigues you. |
Blues/World/Jazz
Atom Bomb The Blind Boys of Alabama |
Traditional Black Gospel quartet. Joyous, lively, spiritual songs with a southern bluesey sound. Tracks 2 and 10 feature Gift of Gab from Blackalicious. Try if you like Sam Cooke, The Reverend Al Greene, Jesus...play 2, 3, 10... |
Blunt Object Live in Tokyo The Bad Plus |
PostBop/Post Modern Jazz trio with an affinity for covering rock/pop songs. This Live album is a bit of a best of you could say. Covers of note: 1 (Queen) 5 (Blondie) and 6 (Aphex Twin) or try one of their originals with 7, or 2. FFO: Brad Mehldau, Herbie Hancock etc. |
