Cut and Paste Instrumental Collage with an Art-Punk that can dance bend. This first full length can keep you moving without losing intrest. For Fans of !!! or Liquid Liquid. Play 2, 3 or 8.
Temper Temper
Temper Temper
Don't let the record label (Revelation Records) fool you, this isn't Hardcore. Out of Milwaukee with an angular art-punk style. Fans of T-Rex, The Rapture, make-Up or PiL should gove this a try. Try 8, 2 or 9 to start.
Picaresque
The Decemberists
Third album from this amazing band is sure to satisfy. Lush Orchestartion as always complements vivid lyrics and a few guests as well. Play 4, 7, 6, 2 , 3 whatever... RIYL: Rufus Wainwright, Andrew Bird etc.
Singles Collection Vol. 2
Dropkick Murphys
Not many singles per say, but over half the album is Cover songs, plus some rarities and B-sides thrown in for good measure. Fans of these Boston Street Punks won't be disappointed though. Among the bands covered are: CCR (2), AC/DC (7), The Misfits (18), Motorhead (15) and more. Plus Shane McGowen (Pogues) adds his vocals to a traditional Irish song "Wild Rover" (20) or you can try their rendition of The Notre Dame fight song (22). For fans of Rancid, Anti-Flag, The Irish.
The Alternative to Love
Brendan Benson
There are some strong tracks on this album, but for me it doesn't live up to the standards of his 2002 release "Lapalco." It might be that this is a very produced and filled out album, while the other was slightly more raw. It reminded me of Paul McCartney's days in Wings for some reason. Anyway... Brendan Benson writes bright and shiney Indie PowerPop about love and broken hearts. If you like Mark Mallman, Jason Falkner or The Mood Elevator give this a try. Start with 1, 6, 5 or 11. I like parts of 4 but other parts annoy me. I'm rambling, sorry.
Prisoners of Love
Yo La Tengo
Matador is putting out a sort of "best of" from the last almost 20 years of Yo La Tengo. This is a 13 song sampler of that 2 or 3 disc set (depending how completist you are). Cherish one of the seminal critics darling indiepop/twee/psychepop bands. I say go with 10, 5, 7, 12 or whatever songs you like really...
Local
Did They Live Happily Ever After?
Poison Control Center
No matter where they move to PCC will always be an Ames band. Pat Flemings brilliant Twee collective. Play 2, 6, 8, 10 or 11. FFO: 63 Crayons, Of Montreal, Apples in Stereo etc.
Blues/World/Jazz
Blues to the Bone
Etta James
Female Blues legend's latest. Try 1, 5, 3, 7, or 12 to start.
Everything's Okay
The Reverend Al Green
Second Album on Blue Note from this legend of 70's soul. Al Green can sing a romantic ballad or a fired up old school romp. But, no matter what he sounds smooth the whole time. These songs feel timeless and mark a well deserved comeback. Fans of Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke or James Brown should enjoy starting with 11, 1, 9 or 2.
RPM/Electronic
Human After All
Daft Punk
Standard Daft Punk album. French dancey electropopdiscofluff. RIYL: Air, Robots, Vocoders. Play 1, 8, 9 or 3.
